Four in 10 UK parents are struggling to afford newborn essentials

A recent Guardian article, drawing on a new study from Barnardo’s, reports that four in 10 UK parents are struggling to afford the essentials for a newborn.

When families can’t access basics like nappies, clothing or safe sleep items, it impacts confidence, health and wellbeing from the very start. No parent should have to face those early weeks without the items they need to keep their baby safe and well.

At Babyzone, we exist to make support easier to access in one warm, welcoming space. That includes practical help when money is tight.

That’s why partnerships are a core part of our model. We work alongside charities and community organisations so families can access support quickly, locally and without judgement.

What this looks like in practice

  • Baby banks and essentials support
Working with partners like Baby Bank Alliance, Little Village and local baby banks (including Stripey Stork in Croydon) helps connect families to essential baby and children’s items.
  • Newborn packs and practical basics
Partners including Early Essentials help ensure families can access items like clothing, toiletries and safe sleep essentials when they’re most needed.
  • Household essentials and crisis support
Partners such as CARE UK Charity, Blackburn Foodbank, Fur Clemt and Blackburn with Darwen Food Alliance help strengthen the practical safety net around families.
  • Advice and cost of living support
Partners including Citizens Advice and National Energy Action (NEA) help families navigate the pressures behind the headline.
